The 2026 Work Zone Camera Pilot: How It Works

The Alabama Work Zone Safety Act creates a single, statewide interstate work zone speed camera pilot, run jointly by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). It authorizes automated photographic speed enforcement in one ALDOT-designated interstate work zone at a time, triggered when a vehicle exceeds the posted limit by 10 miles per hour or more inside an "active work zone," defined as an area with workers present, work-zone signage, and at least two camera-warning signs posted 500 feet or more in advance.

Liability runs to the vehicle's registered owner, with rental and leasing companies excluded (the renter or lessee is treated as the owner for citation purposes, and the notice must tell rental companies how to identify the renter). The law gives owners seven affirmative defenses, including a genuine driver-transfer option: an owner who was not the operator at the time of the violation can raise that as a defense.

The statute is direct about what this program is not. As enacted: "Speeding violations under this act shall be punished by a civil fine of two hundred fifty dollars ($250), which shall be collected as other civil judgments are collected... In no event shall a speeding violation be punishable by a criminal fine or imprisonment," and "the Secretary of ALEA shall not assess any points against a driver license or suspend or revoke a driver license for a speeding violation."

What Happens If You Get a Work Zone Camera Ticket

The notice must give the recipient at least 60 days to pay or contest liability. If you neither pay, request a hearing, nor contest liability in that window, the law treats that silence as an admission of liability for the full amount. A hearing officer or court cannot raise, lower, or waive the $250 fine; if you contest and lose, you also owe costs, due within 60 days of the hearing. A final order carries "the same weight and effect as any other civil judgment," meaning ordinary civil collection, not a criminal record and not an automatic license action. If you appeal to circuit court within 30 days, that appeal pauses enforcement while it's pending.

Does an Alabama Work Zone Camera Ticket Affect Your License or Insurance

No. The statute is explicit that the state will not assess driver's license points and will not suspend or revoke a license over a work zone camera violation, and the fine itself is non-criminal. The act does not say anything one way or the other about insurance reporting, so treat that as an open question rather than a confirmed protection until a program is actually issuing tickets and insurers respond to it.

City Red Light and Speed Cameras Under Title 45

Separate from the statewide pilot, several Alabama cities operate camera programs authorized by their own Title 45 local acts, including Montgomery, Midfield, Bessemer, Center Point, Selma, Opelika, Phenix City, and Brantley. How to Contest an Alabama Work Zone Camera Ticket

Rental Cars and Out-of-State Plates

Alabama's law already accounts for rental vehicles directly in its definition of "owner": for a rented or leased vehicle, the renter or lessee, not the rental company, is treated as the owner for citation purposes, and the notice must explain to rental companies how to identify the renter who was driving. Alabama's narrow scope, one designated interstate work zone at a time, with signage requirements and a hard 2028 sunset, fits that model more closely than a broad, revenue-driven rollout would.

Where Alabama's Camera Law Might Be Headed

The Work Zone Safety Act requires an interim legislative report by March 1, 2027, and the entire program sunsets on September 30, 2028 unless the legislature acts to extend it. Because the pilot has not started ticketing as of this writing, the real test of how it works in practice, including how strictly the 10-mph threshold and the affirmative defenses get applied, is still ahead.
