California Marriage & Divorce Records: Mail-Only Since July 2026

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still order California vital records online?

Not from CDPH. Effective July 1, 2026, CDPH Vital Records no longer accepts applications submitted through online third-party vendors and processes mail applications only. Vendors advertising online California ordering are mailing your application in or rerouting it to a county, and CDPH says it cannot assist with their fees, refunds, or corrections.

Why can't the state give me a copy of my 2005 California marriage certificate?

CDPH's holdings have gaps. It can issue certified copies of public marriage certificates only for 1905 to 1999, 2001, and 2008 to 2025, and it states it cannot provide the years 2000 and 2002 through 2007. For a 2005 marriage, the County Recorder in the county that issued the license is the custodian.

How much does a California marriage or divorce record cost?

As of August 2026, CDPH charges $19.00 per copy of a marriage record and $18.00 per copy of a divorce Certificate of Record, payable by mail to CDPH-VR. County Recorder and Superior Court fees are set locally and differ, so ask the county office for its current schedule.

Is my California divorce public?

The court case file is a Superior Court record and is generally accessible unless a judge has sealed some or all of it in your case. The state-level Certificate of Record exists only for divorces filed between 1962 and June 1984, and even that shows only names, filing date, county, and case number.

Does the CDPH Certificate of Record prove my divorce was finalized?

No. CDPH describes it as consisting only of the face sheet of the divorce action, showing the parties, filing date, county, and case number. A filing is not a judgment. To prove the divorce was granted, you need a certified copy of the decree from the Superior Court in the county where the case was heard.

How do I get a copy of a confidential marriage certificate in California?

Only from the County Clerk's office in the county that issued the confidential marriage license, and only if you are one of the two spouses. CDPH holds no confidential marriage records at all, and Family Code section 511 keeps the certificate closed to inspection except by court order on a showing of good cause.

What is the difference between an authorized and an informational copy?

An authorized certified copy can be used to establish identity and is limited to the registrant, a defined family class including parent, guardian, child, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse or domestic partner, and law enforcement or government agencies on official business. An informational copy carries the same information but is stamped as not valid to establish identity and is available to anyone.

Where do I get an actual California divorce decree?

From the Superior Court in the county where the divorce took place. CDPH states this in its own materials. No state office issues a California divorce decree, so requests for property, support, custody, or enforcement terms always go to the county court.
