How this list is built
Every entry is a law, or part of a law, that has already been passed and signed, or an official rate change that an existing law requires (such as a minimum wage adjusted for inflation), with a date it starts to apply. We link each entry to its official source and quote the sentence that sets its date. Pending bills are never on this list.
Some laws do not set their own date and take effect on the state's default date instead. In California, a statute enacted at a regular session generally goes into effect on January 1 after a 90-day period from its enactment; a bill passed in the first year of the two-year session before that year's interim recess and signed afterward takes effect on the next January 1, and urgency statutes take effect immediately (California Constitution, article IV, section 8(c)). In Illinois, a bill passed before June 1 that does not set a date takes effect on January 1 of the following year, or when it becomes law if that is later (5 ILCS 75/1). Those entries quote the default rule.
One law can start in stages. We list each part that begins on January 1, 2027 and note the law's other dates.
What the labels mean
- Enacted: it is law and its start date is more than 30 days away.
- Takes effect (date): it starts within the next 30 days.
- Only if a condition is met: it starts only if an event happens, such as a vote; we do not show it as in effect until that is confirmed.
- In effect: the date has arrived and we have no record of it being blocked.
- Blocked by a court / On hold: a judge has ordered that it not be enforced for now. We link the order.
- Delayed, Repealed or Replaced: a later law changed its date or removed it. We link that law.
- Condition not met: the event it depended on did not happen, so it does not take effect.
- Not re-checked since (date): we have not verified it again recently, so we do not show it as in effect.
Why a law on this list might not take effect
A court can block a law before its start date, and a legislature can delay or repeal it. When that happens and we confirm it at the official source, the entry moves to the blocked or changed group.
Some provisions depend on a condition, such as a vote, federal approval or funding. Those entries say so under "Depends on". Some federal entries set the latest date by which states must act, and a state can start earlier.
Which states we have reviewed
Each state shows whether we went through the complete list of laws it enacted in its 2025-2026 sessions, did a partial review, or have not reviewed it yet, and the date of that review. A short or empty list does not mean nothing changes in your state.
Limits of this tool
- This is general information, not legal advice. Summaries simplify the law; where they differ from the official text, the official text controls.
- Local ordinances (city or county laws), such as local minimum wages, are not included.
- Purely administrative changes (agency reports, internal procedures) are left out.
- How a law applies can change later through regulations or court decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all new laws take effect on January 1?
No. Many laws set their own date, and each state has its own default rule. This tool shows only the provisions that start on January 1, 2027.
What does it mean when a law is blocked by a court?
A judge has ordered that the law not be enforced for now, usually while a lawsuit continues. That can change if the court rules differently later, and we update the entry when we confirm it.
Why is my state's list short or empty?
The state may have few laws starting that day, or our review of that state may be partial or not done yet. Each state shows its review level.
Is the minimum wage going up in my state on January 1, 2027?
When a state increase for that date is set by law and officially published, it appears as its own entry. Some states adjust their minimum wage for inflation and announce the figure later in the year.
Where do the summaries come from?
We write them from the official text of each law, and every entry links to that text. If they ever differ, the official text controls.
