Court Records in Ontario

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I search Ontario court records online?

Yes, but through one of two different tools depending on location and case type. The Ontario Courts Public Portal covers Toronto-region civil, Divisional Court, small claims, enforcement, and family cases. Justice Services Online covers the rest of the province, plus Toronto's own criminal cases specifically, and requires a My Ontario Account sign-in.

What is the difference between the Ontario Courts Public Portal and Justice Services Online?

The Portal currently works in the Toronto region only, across civil, Divisional Court, small claims, enforcement, and family cases. Justice Services Online covers every other region for all case types, and also stays the tool for Toronto's own criminal cases even though Toronto civil and family moved to the Portal.

Does Ontario's online criminal case search show old or closed cases?

No. The Ontario Court of Justice's criminal search only shows cases with a future court date, a court date within the past 7 days, or a bench warrant issued within the past 5 years. It is a rolling active-docket view, not a historical archive, and it excludes Youth Criminal Justice Act and Provincial Offences Act matters entirely.

Is Case Center (CaseLines) a way to search Ontario court cases?

No. Case Center is a document-sharing and e-hearing platform mandatory in the Superior Court of Justice for counsel to share filed documents with the judiciary ahead of a hearing. It is limited to parties and counsel on an already-scheduled proceeding and has no public case-search function.

How much does it cost to get a copy of an Ontario court file?

The general public pays $11.00 per file to inspect a Superior Court of Justice, Court of Appeal, or Small Claims Court file. Certified copies cost $4.00 per page at the Superior Court of Justice and Court of Appeal, or $3.50 per page at the Ontario Court of Justice. Solicitors and parties to the case inspect files at no charge.

Are Ontario family court records public?

Family court files are open by default, but files involving parenting time, decision-making responsibility, or child abduction require 10 calendar days' written notice under Family Law Rule 1.3 before a member of the public can access them. Child protection hearings and adoption files are closed and sealed automatically by statute, with no notice period involved.

How do I get a transcript of an Ontario court proceeding?

Transcripts are prepared by independent Authorized Court Transcriptionists, not the court itself. A requester contacts a transcriptionist directly through the province's transcriptionist listing site to arrange fees, which are regulated under Ontario Regulation 94/14, along with timelines and delivery.

Are youth court records available in Ontario?

No, not through the tools described here. Youth Criminal Justice Act matters are excluded from the Ontario Court of Justice's online criminal search and from access to the underlying audio recording of a proceeding, consistent with the federal confidentiality protections that apply to youth matters across Canada.
