Massachusetts Child Support Laws (2026): Guidelines & Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Massachusetts have an online child support calculator?

Massachusetts does not provide an official online calculator. You must use the fillable PDF worksheet (CJD 304) available on the Massachusetts court system website. The calculator on this page estimates a guideline amount; the court still requires the official worksheet in all filings.

What is the minimum child support payment in Massachusetts?

Under the 2025 guidelines (effective December 1, 2025), the minimum weekly order is $15 for payors with gross weekly income up to $301. For payors earning between $302 and $391 per week, the minimum is $15 plus a percentage of income above $301.

How long does child support last in Massachusetts?

Child support generally ends at age 18. The court may extend support to age 21 if the child remains dependent, or to age 23 if the child lives with a parent and is enrolled full-time in a post-secondary educational institution. Support may continue indefinitely for a child with a disability.

Can Massachusetts child support be modified retroactively?

Generally, no. Under M.G.L. c. 119A, s. 13, each missed payment becomes a judgment on the date it is due. Retroactive modification is only permitted from the date that a complaint for modification is filed and served. Act quickly if your financial circumstances change.

What happens if a parent does not pay child support in Massachusetts?

The state has broad enforcement powers, including wage withholding (up to 60% of disposable earnings), license suspension, tax refund interception, bank account seizure, property liens, credit reporting, and passport denial. Interest and penalties of 0.5% each per month apply to arrears over $500. Willful nonpayment can result in contempt of court, fines, and jail time.

How Massachusetts Calculates Child Support

  • Massachusetts's guidelines run on GROSS income: income taxes and FICA are never subtracted before the schedule is applied (they are already built into the schedule amounts). Enter income before taxes.
  • Massachusetts uses the Income Shares model under the Massachusetts Child Support Guidelines, combining both parents' incomes to determine the basic support obligation.
  • The basic obligation is determined from the guidelines worksheet based on combined available income and the number of children.
  • A parenting time adjustment applies when the obligor has approximately one-third or more parenting time (approximately 122+ overnights per year — 1/3 × 365 = 121.7). The Massachusetts guidelines use qualitative language ("approximately one-third of the time") rather than a fixed overnight count.
  • Health insurance premiums for the children and work-related childcare costs are added to the basic obligation and divided proportionally between parents.
  • The guidelines apply to combined annual incomes up to $400,000. For combined income above that amount, the court has discretion to set an appropriate support amount.
  • Massachusetts may order support for children over 18 who are still dependent and enrolled in an educational program, up to age 23.
  • Courts may deviate from the guidelines when application would be unjust or inappropriate, with written findings required.

Updates

Corrected the guidelines version history: the 2025 Child Support Guidelines replaced the 2023 amended guidelines, which governed from July 31, 2023 until November 30, 2025, and the prior $12 weekly minimum, $400,000 income cap and $355 child care benchmark are now attributed to the 2021/2023 guidelines.
