How Kansas Calculates Child Support

  • Kansas uses the Income Shares model under KSA § 23-3002, combining both parents' domestic gross incomes (before taxes) to determine the basic child support obligation. Federal and state taxes are embedded in the Kansas schedule — obligors enter gross income, not net.
  • The basic obligation is taken from the Kansas Child Support Schedule (Admin. Order 2025-RL-121, effective July 1, 2025) and prorated between parents based on each parent's share of combined gross income.
  • A parenting time adjustment (also called "residential time credit") applies when the noncustodial parent has 128 or more overnights per year (approximately 35% of the time).
  • Health insurance premiums and work-related childcare costs are added to the basic obligation and divided proportionally between parents.
  • Kansas defines "domestic gross income" broadly to include wages, salaries, tips, commissions, bonuses, pensions, trust income, and other income sources.
  • Courts may deviate from the guidelines if application would be unjust or inappropriate under the circumstances, with written findings required.
  • Kansas child support worksheets must accompany all child support orders filed with the court.
