How Idaho Calculates Child Support

  • Idaho's guidelines run on GROSS income: income taxes and FICA are never subtracted before the schedule is applied (they are already built into the schedule amounts). Enter income before taxes.
  • Idaho uses the Income Shares model under Idaho Code § 32-706 and IRFLP Rule 120, combining both parents' gross incomes to determine the basic child support obligation from a statutory table.
  • Each parent's share of the basic obligation is proportional to their percentage of combined gross income. The non-custodial parent's share becomes the child support order.
  • A shared custody adjustment applies when the non-custodial parent has 92 or more overnights per year (more than 25% of the year, per IRFLP 120), reducing the obligation to account for direct expenditures during parenting time.
  • Health insurance premiums for the children and work-related childcare costs are added to the basic obligation and divided proportionally between parents.
  • Idaho applies a low-income adjustment when the obligor's income falls below the self-support reserve, ensuring the obligor retains sufficient income for basic needs.
  • Courts may deviate from the guidelines upon a written finding of material and substantial reasons, including the needs of the child, the financial resources of each parent, or the standard of living the child would have enjoyed had the marriage continued.
