How Connecticut Calculates Child Support

  • Connecticut uses the Income Shares model under Conn. Gen. Stat. § 46b-215a, combining both parents' net weekly incomes to determine the basic child support obligation from a statutory schedule.
  • Each parent's share of the basic obligation is proportional to their percentage of combined net income. The non-custodial parent's share becomes the child support order.
  • A shared custody (parenting time) adjustment applies when the non-custodial parent has 110 or more overnights per year, reducing the obligation to account for direct expenditures during parenting time.
  • Health insurance premiums for the children and work-related childcare costs are added to the basic obligation and divided proportionally between parents.
  • Connecticut includes a self-support reserve to ensure the obligor retains sufficient income for basic living expenses. The current minimum self-support level is based on the federal poverty guideline.
  • The Connecticut Child Support and Arrearage Guidelines are reviewed and updated every four years as required by federal law. Courts may deviate from the guidelines for reasons including special needs of the child, shared custody arrangements, or extraordinary expenses.
