Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it [cost to change your name](/us-laws/name-change/how-much-does-it-cost-to-change-your-name) in DC?

A flat $60. Petitioners who cannot afford it can apply to proceed without prepaying court costs.

Does DC require publishing a name change in a newspaper?

No. DC repealed its notice and publication requirement in 2013 (D.C. Law 20-37).

How does a divorced person restore a former name in DC?

By asking for it in the divorce case. Under D.C. Code Section 16-915, the court must state the birth-given or other previous name in the divorce decree on request of a party who assumed a new name on marriage. Someone who did not make that request while the divorce was pending files the general adult application under D.C. Code Section 16-2501 instead.

The child's parent, guardian, or next friend, using the same statute and process that applies to adults.

What court handles a name change in DC?

DC Superior Court, for residents of the District.

Updates

Corrected the divorce section: D.C. Code Section 16-915 requires the court to restore a former name in the divorce decree itself on request, so a divorcing DC resident usually does not need a separate name-change application.
