LPA Registration Cost: £92 to Register a Power of Attorney

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to register a lasting power of attorney?

Registering an LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian costs £92 per LPA, or £184 to register both a property and financial affairs LPA and a health and welfare LPA, as of August 2026. There is no discount for registering both at once.

Is the LPA registration fee £82 or £92?

The current fee is £92 per LPA. £82 is an outdated figure that no longer reflects gov.uk's published fee, which has risen over time.

Can I get a reduced or free LPA registration fee?

Yes. If the donor's gross annual income is £12,000 or less, the fee is reduced to £46 (or £23 for a remitted repeat application). A full exemption applies if the donor receives certain means-tested benefits such as Income Support, income-based JSA or Housing Benefit. It is the donor's income and benefits that are assessed, never the attorney's.

How long does LPA registration take?

The OPG states registration takes 8 to 10 weeks if there are no mistakes in the application. Errors or an objection raised during the notification window can extend this.

What happens if I make a mistake on the LPA form?

If a mistake means the application cannot be registered as submitted, you can correct it and resubmit within 3 months of the original application for a reduced fee of £46, rather than paying the full £92 again.

Can I register an LPA fully online now that the Powers of Attorney Act 2023 has passed?

No, not yet. The Act's modernisation provisions, which would allow fully digital registration, have not commenced as of August 2026. Only a narrower change, allowing chartered legal executives to certify copies, is in force. The current online service builds and prints the form; the signed form or a certified copy still has to be posted to the OPG with the fee.

Where do I send the LPA registration form and fee?

By post to the Office of the Public Guardian, PO Box 16185, Birmingham B2 2WH, along with the signed form (or a certified copy with a covering letter) and the fee.

What does it cost if there is no LPA and a family has to apply for deputyship instead?

A Court of Protection deputyship application costs £432 per deputyship type, plus ongoing supervision fees, which is considerably more than the one-off LPA registration fee and involves a slower court process.

Do Scotland and Northern Ireland have the same LPA registration fees?

No. Scotland and Northern Ireland run separate powers of attorney regimes with their own registration processes and fees. See the dedicated Scotland and Northern Ireland guides for those figures.
