Enhanced DBS Check: Cost, Eligibility and Self-Employed Route

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an Enhanced DBS check show that a Standard check does not?

An Enhanced check includes everything a Standard check shows, spent and unspent convictions and cautions subject to filtering, plus any information a local police force holds and considers relevant to the role, even if it did not lead to a conviction. That police-information layer is the distinguishing feature of Enhanced over Standard.

How much does an Enhanced DBS check cost?

Enhanced and Enhanced with barred list(s) both cost £49.50 as of August 2026, and both are free for genuine volunteers. A self-employed applicant using the umbrella-body route pays £49.50 plus the umbrella body's own administration fee, which is not published and varies by provider.

Can anyone apply for an Enhanced DBS check on themselves?

No. An Enhanced check must be requested by an employer or registered body for a role that qualifies under DBS workforce eligibility guidance, or, from 21 January 2026, by an eligible self-employed person or personal employee applying through a registered umbrella body. There is no route to obtain an Enhanced check for a role that does not meet the eligibility gate.

Can self-employed people get their own Enhanced DBS check now?

From 21 January 2026, a self-employed person or personal employee with no organisation to apply on their behalf can apply for their own Enhanced or Enhanced with barred list(s) check, but only through a registered DBS umbrella body, never directly to DBS. The role must still meet the same eligibility rules as any other applicant, and someone contracting their services to an organisation should generally have that organisation apply instead.

What is Enhanced with barred list(s) and who needs it?

It is the highest DBS product, adding a check against DBS's children's and/or adults' barred lists on top of an ordinary Enhanced check. It is reserved for roles meeting the legal definition of regulated activity, most commonly close, ongoing, unsupervised work with children or vulnerable adults, and costs the same £49.50 as a standard Enhanced check.

Who gets sent the Enhanced DBS certificate?

DBS sends the certificate to the applicant's home address only. An employer or umbrella body must ask to see the original in person; they do not receive a copy from DBS directly.

How do I dispute a mistake on my Enhanced DBS certificate?

Report the mistake within 3 months of the date on the certificate, using the certificate dispute form for record errors or Section A of the same form (or a call to DBS customer services) for personal-detail errors. DBS decides the dispute with the relevant police force first; it only goes to the Independent Monitor if the police disagree there is a mistake and the objection is about whether the information is relevant to the role.
