Birth, Death, and Marriage Certificates in British Columbia

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a BC certificate and a certified copy of registration?

A certificate is the standard $27 summary document used for identification, benefits, or a passport application. A certified copy or certified electronic extract of the registration is a separate $50 document reproducing the fuller original registration record, typically requested by courts, consulates, or genealogy researchers.

Who can order a British Columbia death certificate?

Any person can order a death certificate itself under section 38(1) of the Vital Statistics Act, with no restricted entitlement class, and cause of death does not appear on it. A certified copy of the death registration is more restricted unless the death occurred more than 20 years ago.

How much does a British Columbia birth certificate cost?

A standard birth certificate costs $27 by mail or $60 by courier. A certified copy or electronic extract of the birth registration costs $50 by mail or $60 by courier. Rush processing through eCOS adds $33 to the base certificate fee.

When do British Columbia vital records become open for genealogy research?

Births open to any person after 120 years, marriages open after 75 years or once both parties have been deceased for 20 years, and deaths open after 20 years. A dedicated $50 genealogy certificate is also available for births through form VSA 013.

Can I order a British Columbia certificate online?

Yes, through the government's eCOS portal at ecos.vs.gov.bc.ca, for birth, death, and marriage certificates, certified registration copies for births and marriages, and Wills Notices. Applicants other than the subject or a parent of a minor must apply by mail or in person instead.

How do I correct an error on a British Columbia birth registration?

File form VSA 412B with original supporting documents and a witnessed declaration section, by mail or in person at Service BC. The correction fee is $27, plus $27 for each new certificate ordered once the correction is made.
