South Australia Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates: Fees, Eligibility and How to Apply

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a South Australian birth, death or marriage certificate cost?

$72 for a standard certificate of any of the three types, effective from 1 July 2026 under the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration (Fees) Notice 2026, gazetted 14 May 2026. It is one gazetted fee applied to all three certificate types, not three separate prices.

When do South Australian birth, death and marriage records become historical and open to anyone?

A birth certificate after more than 100 years, a death certificate after more than 30 years, and a marriage certificate after more than 75 years. These figures are Registrar policy published under section 47 of the Act, not a rule written into the Act or its Regulations.

Does South Australia use a points based identity check?

No. Applicants combine documents from three published lists, for example two documents from list 1, rather than accumulating a numeric point total.

How long do South Australian parents have to register a birth?

60 days under section 16(1) of the Act. A late registration cannot be refused for lateness alone; section 16(2) requires the Registrar to accept it regardless.

Who registers a death in South Australia, and by when?

In practice the funeral director handles registration, giving the Registrar a written statement within 7 days after burial or cremation, not within 7 days of the date of death. A treating doctor separately must notify the Registrar within 48 hours of the death.

Can I apply for a South Australian certificate by phone?

No. Applications can be made online, by post, or in person at the Gawler Service SA centre or a regional Service SA location, but not by phone.
