Unclaimed Money in Western Australia: How to Search the WA Register

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a deadline to claim unclaimed money in Western Australia?

No. The Unclaimed Money Act 1990 sets no time limit on a claimant coming forward, and DTF's own guidance states that records are held indefinitely until the funds are successfully claimed.

Does the Western Australia unclaimed money register include bank accounts or superannuation?

No. Ordinary bank accounts, life insurance and superannuation are carved out of the WA Act and instead sit with the Commonwealth: bank accounts, life insurance and company money with ASIC, and superannuation with the fund or the ATO.

Is it free to search and claim unclaimed money in Western Australia?

Yes. DTF does not charge to search its register or process a claim. Its own page warns that unregistered investigators and agents who approach people offering paid recovery services have no connection to the department and are not regulated by it.

Who handles unclaimed money from a deceased person's estate in WA?

Not DTF. Estate related unclaimed money questions go to the estate's Executor, or to the WA Public Trustee or the Probate Court if the Executor cannot be identified.

How long does a Western Australia unclaimed money claim take?

DTF's current page states processing takes around 90 days, which it attributes to high claim volume. Complete, correctly certified documentation helps avoid further delay.
