How to Apply for the Disability Support Pension in Australia

Frequently Asked Questions

What form do I use to apply for DSP?

SA466, the Claim for Disability Support Pension form, is the primary claim form for most claimants. Someone with a terminal illness (a life expectancy of less than 2 years) uses a separate Terminal Illness claim form instead. Claiming online through myGov and Centrelink covers the same ground without printing a paper form.

Is there one medical report form for DSP, or several?

Several. SA473 is a checklist the claimant uses to gather the right evidence, SA478 is the matching checklist for the treating health professional preparing that evidence, and SA472 is a separate consent form letting Services Australia contact treating health professionals directly. None of the three is a single clinical report form a doctor completes and submits as the whole of the evidence.

What is the difference between a Job Capacity Assessment and a Disability Medical Assessment?

A Job Capacity Assessment (JCA) is conducted by one of Services Australia's own qualified health professionals and looks at how a condition affects the ability to work. A Disability Medical Assessment (DMA), needed for some claimants, comes after the JCA and is conducted by a government-contracted doctor through Sonic HealthPlus. Not everyone who claims DSP needs a DMA.

How long does a DSP claim take to process?

Services Australia states a claimant can expect to hear from them within 21 days of submitting a claim, which is about contact or progress, not a decision deadline. Separately, once a claim is approved, the first payment typically arrives around 2 weeks later. These are two different clocks, and the time taken to assess a claim does not change any waiting period that applies once it is approved.

Can I get income support while my DSP claim is being assessed?

Often, yes. JobSeeker Payment or Youth Allowance for job seekers may be available while a DSP claim is assessed, and mutual obligation requirements are waived for that period if another income support payment is already in place.

Can DSP be backdated to when my disability started?

Not confirmed as a general rule. A DSP grant generally takes effect on the date of the decision, or an earlier or later date the decision itself specifies, and a claim rejected then later granted on review can, in some circumstances, revert to the original rejection date. This page does not assert a broader entitlement to backdate a grant to the date a disability first began; raise that question directly with Services Australia if it applies to you.
